Regardless of what type of token system is established, you should allow students access to the rewards of the classroom often (daily or more often) and not at the end of the school week. The longer you delay letting students exchange their tokens for privileges, the less valuable the tokens will be in motivating appropriate behavior.

Tokens can also be taken back when a student engages in inappropriate behavior or is off-task. This is known as response cost. If you do this, be sure to keep the ratio of rewards to punishments at 2:1 or greater. This way, students are always earning more tokens than they are losing. You want your class token system to remain a rewarding, not a punitive one. If the ratio drops to 1:1, so that students are losing as many points as they earn, or has students going into debt (the red) with more fines than they have tokens accumulated, the system will no longer work to motivate students to behave well and work appropriately.
